Position Summary:

Under supervision, provides assistance for all sections of Underwriting department through file set-up, data entry, and document preparation as well as general clerical duties such as copying and filing.

Key Responsibilities:

Relying on limited experience and knowledge, the Underwriter Assistant II is responsible for accomplishing the following assignments. These assignments are varied in nature and frequently non-routine.

  • Receive new major medical applications and set up files, including copying applications, entering into system, and creating file labels. May need to request any essential missing information necessary to enter applications into system.
  • Perform initial evaluation of major medical applications, including calculation of premium, notation of missing information, and highlighting of medical concerns for the attention of Assistant Underwriter and/or Individual Medical Underwriter.
  • Process enrollment/change forms and terminations for A+. Enter new enrollees through Intranet and make appropriate changes/terminations in AS400.
  • Ensure accuracy of ID cards and cover letters for A+ enrollment packets. Assemble and mail packets, including ordering and receipt of prescription cards when appropriate.
  • Submit notification to prescription card vendor for new enrollees and terminations.
  • Prepare and send duplicate ID cards and/or packets when requested.
  • Order and file policyholder and enrollee documentation for the Underwriting department, including A+ Group binders, major medical folders, and Atlas packets.
  • Maintain archived underwriting file bins in storage.
  • Other duties as assigned, including back-up for other Underwriting department positions during absences and/or heavy volumes.

  • Report any breakdown in controls to a supervisor or manager.

People Management

  • No people management responsibility
  • May assist in orienting and training less experienced employees.

Position Knowledge, Skills, and Requirements:

Education

  • High school diploma or equivalent

Experience

  • Minimum of two years of relevant and progressive Underwriting experience in area of specialization

Other

  • Solid understanding of insurance
  • Knowledge of insurance industry a plus
  • Ability pay close attention to detail
  • Possess and have ability to apply basic knowledge of principles, practices, and procedures
  • Good written and verbal communication skills with an emphasis on confidentiality, tact, and diplomacy
  • Good organizational and analytical skills; demonstrated ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously
  • Intermediate proficiency and experience using Microsoft Office package (Excel, Access, PowerPoint, Word)

Working Conditions and Physical Demands:

  • Overtime hours may be required to fulfill job responsibilities
  • May require a valid driver’s license
  • May be required to remain stationary for extended periods of time
  • May be required to move up to 10 pounds
  • Must be able to operate a computer and other devices
  • Close vision and ability to adjust focus, such as required to read a computer screen
